Latvian Code documentary: Umbra

Latvian Television's acclaimed 'Latvian Code' series of documentaries is back for 2024.

Each week we are bringing you a thought-provoking and entertaining offering from the most recent run, complete with English-language subtitles, to give you a look at parts of Latvian life and personalities you might not normally encounter. The fifth film in this season is 'Umbra' directed by Aleksejs Beļeckis. In the north of Latvia, in the village of Drusti, there is "Savvaļa", a place where art and untamed nature meet. The young artist Katrina grew up here, for whom the forest is a place to find one's way, not to get lost.

'Umbra' is a poetic documentary about the open-air art space created by the painter Andris Eglītis and his associates through Katrína's personal experience and an artist's view of the world. It is a story about a community of artists and their creative everyday life – full of both joy and doubt.
