With 35,000 viewers having seen Melānijas hronikas ('The Chronicles of Melanie') within two weeks of release, it has become the most popular local film in Latvia this year, the National Film Center said Thursday. The film will premiere internationally in Tallinn on November 21 and is on nationwide release in Latvia.

The film by Viesturs Kairišs is based on the life of Melānija Vanaga, a Latvian writer who survived deportation to Siberia, and stars Sabine Timoteo as the eponymous lead character. It's a co-production between Latvia, Finland and the Czech Republic.
