Foreign publishers are being invited to apply for grants to promote Latvian books in their home markets.

The Latvian Writers’ Union announced the new round of grants January 17. The competition is open for all foreign publishers wishing to publish literary works by Latvian authors in languages other than Latvian.

There are a couple of weeks to send in an application, with the deadline February 6th of this year.

All applications will be evaluated by a committee of experts – and those granted financial support will be told in March.

The competition is a part of the three-year program "Support for Foreign Publishers Publishing Latvian Literature" funded by the Ministry of Culture and the State Culture Capital Foundation (SCCF). The aim of this program is to ensure that the country's best literature is accessible beyond the borders of Latvia.

The next grant competition for foreign publishers publishing Latvian literature abroad is scheduled for April 2017.

In a separate announcement January 17, the foreign ministries of Estonia and Latvia announced the annual contest for the Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian Language Promotion Award.

In accordance with the Award’s regulations, a translation, piece of research, or a Latvian language teacher in Estonia, or Estonian language teacher in Latvia, that have contributed to the promotion of Latvian and Estonian in 2016, can be nominated for the award. The Jury’s decision on a winner will be announced in the spring of 2017.

The aim of the award is to emphasise the importance of knowledge and use of the Estonian and Latvian languages and to recognize the achievements of translators, linguists and teachers for their contribution to the Estonian-Latvian language cooperation.

In 2015, Foreign Ministries of Latvia and Estonia decided to expand the regulation of the well-known Estonian-Latvian and Latvian-Estonian translation award.

In addition to fiction, translations from other fields, such as politics, science, art, history, sociology, etc., can also be nominated. Also, language teachers and linguists from schools and universities in Estonia and Latvia who have contributed to promoting Estonian and Latvian in both countries, can be nominated for the award.

The value of the award is €3,000 and the award fund receives equal contributions from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia. The jury of the award consists of representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia, as well as language and literature experts.
