'The Chronicles of Melanie' dominates film awards

As widely expected, the deportation drama The Chonicles of Melanie carried off most of the top prizes at Latvia's most prestigious film awards ceremony November 13.

The Lielais Kristaps National Cinema Awards saw director Viesturs Kairišs taking the best director prize while The Chronicles of Melanie was recognized as the best feature film. The film also won in the Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Design and Best Costume Design categories.

The film, which has garnered widespread praise and is based upon the powerful writings of Melanija Vanaga, deported to Siberia during the Soviet occupation of Latvia, can be seen online (subject to geoblocking) for a limited period here

Other winners included Independence Day, about the visit of Slovenian industrial music band Laibach to North Korea, in the best documentary category.

Best screenplay went to Lote Eglīte for Bize un Negula,  best composer was Andris Dzēnitis for Pirmdzimtais and best actor was Kaspars Znotinš, also for his work in Pirmdzimtais.
