Musical treats and cinema are in store for this weekend in Latvia.

Baltic cinema pearls

The Baltic Pearl film festival is underway September 21 to September 28 with Thierry Frémaux, the director of the Cannes Film Festival, having participated in the opening event.

"This year the festival’s main theme is the legend, as the film authors and film characters are both legendary personalities of the film history – such as the Lumière brothers, Jean Luc Godard, David Lynch, and our contemporaries who have become the living legends – such as Andrey Zvyagintsev, Renata Litvinova, Stephen Fry and Sally Potter, similarly are the legendary personalities who are featured in the films – American writer J.D. Salinger, legendary singer Dalida, permanent editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia Franca Sozzani and many others," organizers say.

The films are screened in their original language with Latvian and Russian subtitles. Look at the schedule HERE

While the Great Guild in Riga will on September 22 at 7 p.m. open this year's season of Sinfonietta Riga with conductor Normunds Šnē leading Felix Mendelssohn’s vibrant Violin Concerto. Other treats are in there, too.
