1) Night mushrooming in Latgale
This has to be about the most Latvian form of recreation imaginable: picking mushrooms at night in the wilds of Latgale. Why? Well, the days are too short and you can never have enough mushrooms. Obviously.
This nocturnal foraging takes place at the Numernes Valnis nature park in Karsava district. Full details HERE, but you'll need to book in advance. Take your own knife, basket and tent. If everyone starts talking Belarusian, you have wandered too far into the forest.
If you fancy something a bit less extreme and a bit closer to Riga, how about THIS little night-time expedition for kids in Jurmala?
2) Chamber music festival Sanusi
A festival with a difference which proves that its; not just rock and rollers who are prepared to live in a tent in order to enjoy their music. Listen to high quality chamber music, jazz and acoustic sets in a beautiful setting near the Lithuanian border and amid a crowd that is unlikely to start stage bombing. As well as music there are lectures and theatrical performances, including some for kids.
More information HERE.
3) Jaunpils medieval day
Take a trip back in time to the days of chivalry, legend and poor sanitation at Jaunpils medieval day. Knights' tournaments, theater performances, dances and other entertaining activities have been organized during the festival, with crafts and creative workshops available to adults and children alike. This year there is a special focus on food and drink. All in the impressive setting of Jaunpils castle.
