Literary beer release celebrates Latvian writers

A new sort of beer bearing downbeat quotes from Latvian writers has been released to celebrate Latvia's literary greats. Its name - #iamintrovert - is shared with the hashtag Latvia will use at the 2018 London Book Fair, and the recipe features potatoes, a true staple of the Latvian diet.

The bottles feature quotes from the works Māra Zālīte, Jānis Joņevs, Osvalds Zebris, Inga Ābele and Kārlis Vērdiņš. Another one has an 'introversion scale' showing how much more extroverted the drinker becomes with each gulp.

Its signature artwork was authored by Reinis Pētersons, ever popular with the Life of I. series dedicated to the life of an unnamed Latvian writer.

The new beer also stands out as it features potatoes, which along with dill are among the most often used ingredients in Latvian food.

"Potatoes are the éminence grise of Latvia, so I wanted to work this inconspicuous character into the drink so that its influence is unobtrusive but surmisable," said Krišjānis Zeļģis, head of the Malduguns brewery and himself also a well-known poet.

#iamintrovert beer is on sale in the hippest places across Rīga and Cēsis.

In 2018, the Baltics will be the central focus countries at the international London Book Fair.

Latvia's writers and books are promoted for the fair using the #iamintrovert hashtag.
