Gulbis reproduced the vintage form which once saw him rise to the top ten in the world - whereas today he languishes in 589th place.
In contrast, Del Potro is ranked 29th.
Nevertheless, Gulbis outplayed his opponent, racking up 28 aces during the course of three sets and married his power game to some delightful drop shots and lobs.
Now he will play world number 1 and multiple grand slam winner Novak Djokovic.
Gulbis on the rise.
