Latvia's Eurobasket squad ready for take off

Latvia's squad for the men's Eurobasket 2017 competition has been confirmed, the Latvian Basketball Association confirmed August 28.

Ainars Bagatskis, the head coach of the Latvian men's team, said after a final team training session that center player Ilja Gromovs will not be among the 12 players being sent to the European Championship finals.

The last training was attended by all eligible players including Kristaps Porziniģis, whose medical examinations confirmed that a small injury had healed sufficiently. After the session Bagatskis thanked Gromov for participating in the warm-up process over recent weeks.

The most experienced player in the squad will be Janis Blums, playing in his seventh European Championship finals (a national record). Kristaps Janičenoks is not far behind, playing for the sixth time in the European Championship.

The other squad members are Janis Strelnieks, Dairis Bertans, Martins Meiers, Davis Bertans, Janis Timma, Rolands Smits, Aigars Skele, Andrejs Grazulis and Zanis Peiners.

The team travels to Istanbul on Wednesday, August 30.

The European Championship finals will start on August 31, while the Latvian national team will play its first game on September 1 against Serbia.
