Medal hopes take a tumble on Olympic BMX track

Latvia's hopes of recording at least one Olympic medal took a tumble Thursday when both of the country's participants in men's BMX failed to reach the final stages of the competition.

Two-time Olympic champion Maris Strombergs and newcomer Edzus Treimanis failed to rack up enough points in their best-of-three quarter final races.

Strombergs fell in one of his races, making qualification difficult. Treimanis actually outperformed his more famous compatriot and missed out on qualification for the semi-finals by just one point.

There was disappointment elsewhere for Latvia's athletes too. In the women's javelin, medal hope Madara Palameika finished tenth and in women's wrestling Anastasija Grigorjeva, another medal hope, finished her event in eighth place.

It all means that on day 14 of the Rio Olympics Latvia has still to win a medal of any color, with opportunities to do so dwindling rapidly.
