Ostapenko claims second title in Korea

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvian tennis star Jelena Ostapenko proved her extraordinary triumph at the French Open earlier in the year was no fluke by adding a second tour win of the season to her trophy cabinet September 24.

Ostapenko claimed her second title by winning the final of the Korean Open in Seoul  6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in a little over two hours, over coming Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia in a hard-fought match.

Proof of Ostapenko's burgeoning star power came in the fact that the tournament recorded its first ever sell-out for the final with Ostapenko a clear favorite among the 9,000 spectators.

"I'm really happy to win my second title here and in my career. I enjoyed playing here, and to also see so many Latvian flags is amazing," she told the crowd in the post-match interview.

Ostapenko is currently ranked number 10 in the world, but her latest victory is likely to see that ranking improve further.
