Ostapenko out after encounter with Venus

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia's tennis star Jelena Ostpenko's remarkable winning streak finally came to an end July 11 with a loss to multiple grand slam winner Venus Williams at Wimbledon.

But the 20-year-old, sometimes referred to as 'Alona', did herself credit with a battling display against one of the greatest players ever to pick up a racquet, eventually losing 3-6, 5-7 against an opponent 17 years her senior.

After her astounding French Open triumph there was widespread speculation about whether Ostapenko was a shooting star who somehow managed a freak victory or a new name to grace the tennis heavens.

By reaching the Wimbledon quarter finals, disposing of several top-class players on the way and proving competitive against an opponent as formidable on grass as Venus Williams, she has comprehensively settled that question.

Well played!
