Ostapenko reaches French Open final!

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia's Jelena  (Aļona) Ostapenko wrote a new chapter in Latvia's sporting history June 8 as she played Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in the semi final of the French Open tennis championship at Roland Garros, Paris.

In doing so she became the first Latvian player ever to reach a grand slam final - all the more remarkable since she went into the tournament unseeded.

Here are set-by-set updates of what happened...

EPILOGUE: The crowd sings happy birthday to her on her 20th birthday. What a way to celebrate. An interviewer tells her she was hitting her forehand harder than Andy Murray's. Roll on Saturday and the final.

THIRD SET 9th game: Jelena is one game away from a grand slam final! She goes 40-15 up. Match point! 40-30! A sweet forehand and SHE DID IT! Jelena Ostapenko is in the final of the French Open! She won 7-6, 3-6, 6-3!

THIRD SET, 8th game: Proving she has more than power, Jelena wins the first points with a deft drop of her own. She takes a 40-0 lead and looks relentless! She takes the game to love after Bacsinszky's lob drifts long! 5-3!

THIRD SET: This is getting very tense... Jelena has two break points against Bacsinszky's serve! Can she do it? YES! In a brilliant piece of hard court tennis, Jelena sends her opponent from one side of the court to the other then puts a winner right in the corner. 4-3 to Jelena! She's playing like she's been in a dozen grand slam semi finals!

THIRD SET: Longest rally of the match so far early in sixth game, perhaps as both players tire slightly. It's a hot day in Paris, too. A couple of unforced errors and Jelena faces a break point against her serve... and Bacsinszky makes no mistake. 3-3!

THIRD SET: Bacsinszky starts the fifth game with another trademark drop shot to win the first point. But Jelena is piling on pressure and her opponent is starting to look a bit flustered. Jelena has another break point but we go to yet another deuce game, which the Swiss takes when Jelena hits the net. 3-2 to Ostapenko.

THIRD SET: WHAT? Everyone in the stadium thinks Jelena has won the game (which included an amazing backhand smash), but there's another late line call and the game goes to deuce. Ostapenko goes to advantage but is pegged back again. Then she takes advantage again and beautiful drop shot from the Swiss again stops her. Advantage Jelena again after a brutal winner... but back to deuce again! And back to ADV Jelena again... and back to deuce again... the crowd are starting to get behind Jelena... an awesome passing shot from the back of the court sees her take ADV yet again... and finally she closes out the game! 3-1 to Jelena! If she can keep holding her serve she'll be in the final. That was epic.

THIRD SET: And Jelena breaks straight back! After Jelena goes 0-40 up with a brutal mauling of the serve, Bacsinszky fights back to 30-40 with a couple of clever serves with heavy spin. But at the third game point Jelena makes no mistake. 2-1!

THIRD SET: Bacsinszky breaks back straight away - but there were a couple of very late line calls which do not amuse Jelena. It's 1-1.

THIRD SET: Bacsinszky serves the first came but Jelena is really crunching her returns! Sure enough she breaks her opponent and takes the first game! Bravo.

SECOND SET TO BACSINSZKY. The Swiss player piles on the pressure and it's enough to break Jelena's serve and take the set 6-3. Third set will be the decider!

With Bacsinszky 4-3 we get an epic game which goes repeatedly to Advantage... then with the court yawning, Jelena smashes into the net! 5-3 to Bacsinszky and Jelena must serve to stay in the set...

SECOND SET: After a strong start, Jelena makes a couple of unforced errors, including a double fault, to put herself under pressure...

FIRST SET: OSTAPENKO - A hard-fought and tense set sees Jelena win on the tie-break (7-4) to take the set 7-6.
