Ostapenko up to 8th place in WTA rankings

Latvia's No 1 female tennis player Jelena Ostapenko has climbed another two places in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings and is ranked eighth this week, a new record for both Ostapenko and Latvia.

In September, Ostapenko became the first Latvian ever to make it to the WTA top ten. Ernests Gulbis was in tenth place in the men's ATP rankings for a few weeks in 2014. These day's he is ranked 206th in the world.

As reported, on September 24 Ostapenko triumphed at the Korea Open to win her second career title. Last week she got as far as the semifinals of the Wuhan Open. At the beginning of the summer, Ostapenko won the French Open, becoming the first player from Latvia to win a Grand Slam tournament.

In the meantime, Latvia's other leading player, Anastasija Sevastova is ranked 19th in the latest WTA rankings, one place down from last week. On Saturday, she was defeated by Russia's Maria Sharapova 6-7 (3:7), 7-5, 6-7 (7:9) at the China Open.

Diana Marcinkevica is in 249th place in the WTA rankings, Daniela Vismane is 1,031st, and Irina Lapustova is 1,108th.

Garbine Muguruza (Spain) is ranked first, for the fourth week in a row. Simona Halep (Romania) is second Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) is third.
