An outstanding sporting year was rounded off in fine style December 21 with Latvia honoring its sporting stars.

At a glittering ceremony in Riga, the sportsman of the year was named as NBA basketball superstar Kristaps Porziņģis, while sportswoman of the year was Aļona Ostapenko (known internationally as Jelena) who became the first Latvian ever to win a grand slam tennis tournament when she triumphed at the French Open and staked a claim to a top ten world ranking.

There were a couple of surprises too with Motocross star Pauls Jonass beating world champion boxer Mairis Briedis to the public vote prize thanks to his legions of motorsport fans.

Team of the year was the men's national basketball team for their excellent showing at the Eurobasket championships.

Paralympic athlete of the year was Diana Dadzīte.
