WATCH: Soccer team slumps to another home defeat

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Latvia's soccer World Cup qualifying campaign sank further into the swamp October 10 with a 0-2 defeat at home to Hungary.

As with the Faroe Islands a few days earlier, Hungary scored a goal in each half and dominated possession.

Latvia did play better than against the Faroes or Andorra but despite fashioning some clear cut chances could not put the ball in the back of the net.

The first goal came in the 10th minute frm Adam Gyurcso and immediately set the hosts back on their heels (Note: video may not work in all territories).

In the 77th minute Latvian keeper Andris Vanins made a spectacular save to prevent a certain score - but the effort was in vain as from the resulting corner the Adam Szalai doubled the Hungarian lead.

Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban were watching the match from the stands and a large number of travelling fans gave boisterous support to their team throughout both inside and outside the ground where they let off flares and smoke bombs.

With their only points in three matches coming an a narrow 1-0 victory over Andorra, and the two strongest teams in the group, Switzerland and European Champions Portugal still to play, Latvia now needs a full-sized miracle to qualify for Russia 2018
