People will have to be in work longer to get jobless benefits

According to a proposal for the next year's budget, starting 2017 Latvians will have to be continuously employed for at least 12 of the last 16 months in order to receive unemployment benefits, reported LTV Thursday.

Currently people who have worked for 9 out of the past 12 months are eligible for unemployment benefits.

The Welfare Ministry says that the move is an attempt to reduce the number of unsubstantiated jobless benefit claims. According to the ministry, savings of about €7m are to be generated this way.

The proposal is included among the next year's budget laws.
