Unemployment at lowest level for eight years

In July, registered unemployment in Latvia was at its lowest level over the past eight years.

In July 2017, unemployment in Latvia decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 7.1 percent, according to information released by the State Employment Agency.

The  Agency points out that this is the lowest unemployment level since 2009.

The number of people registered with the State Employment Agency as jobless decreased by 1,154 over the month, from 66,708 people at the beginning of July to 65,554 at the end of the month.

The lowest unemployment rate, 4.6 percent, was recorded in Riga Region, while the highest jobless rate, 16.4 percent, was recorded in the eastern Latvian province of Latgale. Also, joblessness was at 7.7 percent in Kurzeme, 7.6 percent in Vidzeme and 6.5 percent in Zemgale.

At the end of July 2016, the unemployment rate in Latvia stood at 8.3 percent.
