Road repairs following heavy rain to cost €1m

The state will have to spend around €1m to fix local and regional roads that were washed away in Latgale last week, said Latvijas Valsts Ceļi road maintenance company boss Jānis Lange.  

Some roads still closed

While many roads have been fixed to allow traffic to run through, seven roads are still closed in Latgale with some submerged underwater.

On some roads the asphalt has been washed away making the roads look like construction sites. 

While most of the roads that are still closed are of local significance, the regional Viļaka – Kārsava (P45) by Pazlauska and Baltinava.

While on Monday the Ruskulova–Bērzpils (V493) road was also flooded

Appearing on Latvian Television, Jānis Lange said that about €1m would be required to fix the roads following the flood, and that €73,000 have already been spent for the task. 

Repair works will begin in earnest when water levels will have fallen in the rivers across Latgale. 

Meanwhile LETA reported about cows that were trapped on an island that appeared by the Kūkova river in Baltinava due to the floodwaters.

As the water levels are no longer rising, there is no longer danger of the cows swimming away across the Russian border.
