Hungarian foreign minister talks Western European "blackmail" in Riga

Take note – story published 6 years ago

On 29 June, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, who is in Riga on a brief working visit.

No press conference was held, but according to a release after the fact by the ministry:

"The Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral relations between their countries, the process of the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, international migration-related problems, energy security and the EU’s enlargement policy. Both officials expressed appreciation of the friendly relations and active political dialogue between Latvia and Hungary.

"Referring to issues currently of high importance for the EU, the Ministers agreed that Brexit negotiations should be pragmatic and constructive and that the EU-U.K. relationship, especially in security and economy, should also remain close after the U.K. leaves the EU.

"The Hungarian Foreign Minister explained Hungary’s situation in the migration context and emphasised that the country is providing significant contribution to the strengthening of the external borders of the Schengen Area. The Ministers recognised that, in dealing with the migration crisis in Europe, solidarity among countries and compromises in joint decision-making are aspects of key importance; nevertheless, final decisions on migration policy should remain a matter of national competence.

"Edgars Rinkēvičs outlined the state of affairs in Latvia’s energy sector and informed the Hungarian Foreign Minister about regional cooperation aimed at reinforcing energy security. It is important for Hungary, Péter Szijjártó noted, that uniform EU standards in the energy sector are applied equally all over the EU.

"As the Ministers shared views on EU enlargement policy, they also discussed developments in the Western Balkan countries and commended Montenegro’s achievements on its path to integration with the EU.

"During his visit, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade will also meet with members of the Saeima (the Latvian Parliament) and the Minister of Economy, Arvils Ašeradens."

The release by the ministry is reproduced in full above and contains no directly attributable quotes from either minister.

However the Hungarian foreign ministry has a far more specific and colorful account of the visit that does include some direct words from their minister in which he appears to refer to mandatory refugee quotas being "unacceptable" and talking of attempts by western European countries to "blackmail" countries in Eastern Europe that don't play ball - a considerably more opinionated stance than could possibly be inferred from the Latvian account.

However, as the statement is in Hungarian only at the time of writing, we will not venture to provide a translation. But you can read it HERE and take your chances with Google Translate.
