President Raimonds Vējonis took advantage of his attendance at the Winter Olympic games in South Korea February 13 to have a meeting with his South Korean counterpart.

Vējonis met with the President Moon Jae-in to discuss bilateral political and economic relations as well as international security issues and was keen to talk up the potential for increased business activity between the two countries in the first ever visit to the country by a Latvian president.

He was accompanied on the trip by a delegation of businessmen as well as the ministers of Foreign Affairs and Economics.

"South Korea is one of the most advanced countries in the field of science, innovation and creativity. Latvia also sees its future development based on the development of new technologies, as well as in free access to public data. This creates additional opportunities for developing cooperation between the two countries in research and innovative technologies, including attracting new South Korean companies to Latvia."

In the other direction, Latvia had the potential to export more food products to South Korea and to attract more tourists, he added, and praised the fact that in recent years both countries had opened embassies on the other's territory.

Speaking about the security situation in the Korean peninsula, Vējonis noted the need to find a solution to the situation in a peaceful and diplomatic way while condemning North Korean provocative actions and rhetoric. The recent high-level talks between South Korea and North Korea are a positive step towards a peaceful solution, he said.

The President of South Korea was invited to visit Latvia to celebrate the centenary of the Latvian state later this year.
