Government ministers are set to break out of their Riga bubble in the next couple of weeks by holding a cabinet meeting in Latvia's second-largest city, Daugavpils.

"In order to discuss development of Latgale region and topical issues and to bring the work of government and its decisions closer to the public on Tuesday, May 16, the current government will meet in Daugavpils," an official announcement said May 2.

On the cabinet agenda will be questions about the increase in funding for the national road network, support for the production and development of agriculture, higher education management modernization and Daugavpils City development prospects, the information said.

The 16 May government meeting in Daugavpils will also be open to interested parties from state institutions, local government and NGOs. Similarly, members of the public are also invited in person to get to know the daily work of government.

For those that cannot make it in person, the meeting will also be livestreamed at the Cabinet of Ministers' web page.

Other topics to be discussed will include development of the armed forces in Latgale region, judicial reform and prisons.

The Daugavpils meeting follows a similar initiative last November in Liepaja, which was the first time the cabinet had held a meeting outside Riga for nearly ten years, the previous occasion being in 2007 in the northern city of Valmiera.
