Latvia on Wednesday joined most of the rest of the international community in congratulating Ukraine on the return from Russia of pilot Nadiya Savchenko.

"The Foreign Ministry of Latvia congratulates Nadiya Savchenko on her return home and expresses satisfaction that the sustained support for Nadiya Savchenko from the international community, including Latvia, has facilitated the resolution of the issue," said a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

"At the same time, the Foreign Ministry notes that several Ukrainian citizens are still being illegally detained in Russia and calls on Russia to also release these persons in compliance with the commitments made in the “Package of measures for the implementation of the Minsk Agreements” on the release of political hostages and illegally detained persons. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be keeping focus on this matter," it added.

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics added his personal thoughts on Twitter.

Today, on 25 May, in Rostov-on-Don, Nadiya Savchenko was exchanged for two Russian military servicemen detained in Ukraine.

On 17 July 2014, separatists supported by Russia abducted Nadiya Savchenko, a Ukrainian air force pilot, in Ukraine and in violation of international law illegally transferred her to Russia, where she was arrested and charged with murder of two Russian journalists.

On 22 March 2016, Donetsk City Court in the Rostov region of the Russian Federation sentenced Nadiya Savchenko to 22 years in jail.
