The Customs Police of the State Revenue Service has handed over to the prosecutor’s office a criminal procedure on what is the largest hashish contraband bust in Latvia’s history. Criminal prosecution will be started against four people, the service reported.

In April 2015 Customs Police nabbed 1,057 kilograms of hashish, and its value is estimated at €8-12 million.

The drug contraband was carried out by an organized group – employees of two Latvian-registered companies. The companies conducted international cargo transportation on a regular basis. Packages of hashish were hidden in a secret compartment of a minibus.

Under the criminal procedure, ten searches, 20 lab tests, 55 inspections and 40 interrogations were conducted. Information was obtained from three other EU member states and Russia.

On August 9, 2017, the criminal procedure has been sent to the prosecutor’s office for launch of criminal persecution against four suspects, three Latvian non-citizens, born in 1955, 1962, and 1971, and one Latvian citizen, born in 1970. A criminal procedure against the fifth suspect was separated, and the person has been put on search.
