According to police spokesmen, the operation took place at six separate addresses in Riga, Saulkrasti and Adazi and involved special Omega Force officers as well as regular police officers and border guards.
The arrested individuals - many of whom were Chinese - are suspected of involvement in a large-scale cyber-fraud and telephone fraud perpetrated in China believed to be worth around 2 million euros, though details of the fraud or the suspects were not outlined in detail, as the operation was described as ongoing.
The swoop took place at the request of Chinese law enforcement and following two months of preparations and many of those detained are believed to be in Latvia illegally. Checks on their status are still taking place.
