Latvian youth runs amok with axe in Switzerland

A young man from Latvia went berserk in the Swiss town of Flums on Sunday, injuring several people with an axe, Swiss media reported October 23. 

The perpetrator is described as a 17-year old Latvian, though he has not been named. who injured several people with an axe in Flums, canton St Gallen, has been arrested. 

"The teenager carried out the attacks near the town’s post office shortly after 8pm on Sunday. He then fled the scene using a stolen car before crashing it. The attacker then injured more people in a petrol station while trying to escape. He was finally apprehended by the police who shot and injured him," said the SwissInfo website. 

Police sad they did not suspect the young man was motivated by terrorism and said this was believed to be his first offense.

It has no been specified how many people were injured in the rampage, nor how seriously.

“According to current information, the attacker is a first-time offender. At this point in time, there is nothing to suggest he has a terrorist background,” said the police statement.

Flums is a small town with a population of 5,000 located in St Gallen canton in the east of Switzerland, not far from the Austrian border.
