A wanted couple was caught taking a moonlit dip in the Riga canal on the late hours of May 25, the Riga Municipal Police said.

After police saw someone in the water on one of the city's numerous cameras, a van was sent to the scene close to the Fish Pavilion of the Riga Central Market.

On site, the police saw a shirtless man about to pop into what the police narrator called the "sweet waters of the canal".

The woman, seen in the video with a soaked red t-shirt, was ordered to swim to the shore and helped to emerge on dry land by once of the policemen.

The couple said they had celebrated their son's eight birthday. They reportedly had alcohol on their breath.

As the water was cold, an ambulance was called to the scene however the woman refused medical attention.

After checking their documents the police found the couple were wanted for unspecified crimes and took them to the nearest State Police station.

The police cameras also noted that a beaver - a creature better acquainted with water than humans - was munching on grass nearby.

Luckily this did not take place in Daugavpils, known for its unsociable beavers, as it might have easily escalated into a hostage situation.
