More Canadian troops head to Latvia this week

A fresh batch of Canadian military personnel will leave for Latvia on June 9, Canada's military said in a release June 7.

Around 100 soldiers will leave Edmonton on June 9 for Latvia as part of Operation REASSURANCE, the release said.

The soldiers are from the 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, and will be part of NATO's enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) battalion.

An official welcome ceremony of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP)  battlegroup in Latvia will take place on June 19, 2017, at Camp Ādaži, another media release said.

This group will join 50 Canadian personnel already in Latvia. The deployment will involve 450 Canadian Forces personnel in total, with Canada taking the lead in the multinational presence designed to ward off any potential Russian aggression.
