2% more babies born in first half of 2016

According to provisional data by Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau, the number of newborns during the first six months of 2016 has increased 2% on year, the bureau told the press Wednesday.

The first half of 2016 saw the births of 10,943 babies, or 224 more than in the first half of 2015.

However the number of marriages registered in Latvia decreased 2.5% in the first half of 2016, down to 4,585.

The bureau estimates that Latvia's population on July 1, 2016 was 1.96m, which is 9,000 less than at the beginning of the year.
