From January to September of 2015, a total of 16,390 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 167 children or 1 percent less than in the corresponding period of 2014, according to data by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).

According to CSB representative Kristine Romanovska, the number of babies born to women temporarily residing abroad has not yet been recorded, therefore the published information will be updated.

In 2015, the number of deaths has slightly increased. 21,287 persons passed away during the first nine months of 2015, which is 280 or 1.3 percent more deaths than during the first nine months of 2014.

The Central Statistical Bureau points out that natural increase in Latvia since 1991 has been negative, and the number of births is still lagging behind the number of deaths.

During the first nine months of 2015, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, resident population has decreased by 4,897 persons (in the corresponding period of the previous year - by 4,450).

However, during the first nine months of 2015, 11,403 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 1,189 marriages or 12 percent more than in the corresponding period of 2014. The number of marriages has been increasing already since 2011.

The preliminary number of population in Latvia on October 1, 2015, accounted for 1,976,500 people.
