It may be hard to believe but according to a new report Latvians are getting gloomier, reported the LETA news agency October 17.

The overall mood of people in Latvia has deteriorated lately, said Baltic International Bank’s spokeswoman Teika Lapsa, citing the latest Baltic International Bank Latvia Barometer survey.

The bank’s spokeswoman indicated that with the weather turning increasingly autumnal (hardly unexpected), Latvians’ outlook on the situation in the country at large and their families has become bleaker, with the indices of all areas analyzed in the survey (overall situation, economy, family finances, employment prospects and the government’s performance) dropping three points on average.

The index reflecting the material situation of the respondents’ families fell at the fastest rate, from -9 points to -11 points.

When asked about their families’ likely material state in a year’s time, 17 percent of respondents voiced an optimistic outlook, while 15 percent expected a House of Usher style deterioration.

Meanwhile, respondents’ assessment of Latvia’s overall situation and the economy deteriorated by one point, with 25 percent of respondents saying that things in Latvia are going in the right direction.

Asked to assess the government’s job performance, 77 percent of respondents voiced disapproval.

Lapsa noted that the survey also revealed people’s pessimism regarding the labor market, with 61 percent of respondents in the poll saying that it is not possible to find a good job.

In the changeable part of the poll respondents were surveyed about Latvia’s demographic issues and emigration, the desirable and actual number of children in family, obstacles preventing people from having more children and emigration.

A more detailed presentation on the survey is scheduled for October 19, provided everyone hasn't lost the will to live first.
