Population decline continues

Latvia's population dipped further below the psychologically important 2 million mark in the first seven months of 2014, data released Wednesday showed.

"The population of Latvia on 01 August 2014 accounted for 1,994,300," the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) said in a data release on births, marriages and deaths.

There was some good news: during the seven months of 2014, 12,488 newborns were registered, which is 554 babies more than in the same period of 2013.

6,186 marriages were registered this year, which is 383 more than in the seven months of the previous year.

However, with 16,747 people dying during the same period, natural increase in Latvia still remains negative because the number of births does not exceed the number of deaths.

The number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 4,259.

CSB figures show the Latvian population dropped below the 2 million mark in April-May this year.
