Publishing child support debtors names pays off for state

Latvia has recovered by 34% more money since making the names of child support dodgers public, but the number of parents avoiding the payments is still high and stands at 30,377, BNS was told at the Latvian Justice Ministry.

As of July 1, 2015, the administration of the Maintenance Guarantee Fund has been posting data on child support evaders on its official website, indicating the debtors' names, surnames, personal identification numbers and years of birth.

This year, the fund recovered €2,516,877 of the money it had paid to single parents, which was 34%, or around €630,000 more than during the first nine months of 2014.

As at September 30, 2015, the fund had been paying child support to 20,136 applicants raising 27,579 children in total.

The total number of persons listed as child support evaders is 30,377. Their total child support debt, outstanding since 2004, is €138.7m.
