According to the minister, the decision was made after a National Construction Control Bureau report over the safety of the circus building.
Melbārde said that the Circus building is in a critical condition, and it needs a complete renovation. "It is a big question whether there'll be a circus as a culture institution in Latvia [at all]," she said.
She said the state has not been able to invest into the building properly as the state had been involved in litigation of 20 years over the property rights of the circus.
Meanwhile Thursday morning the head of the construction control bureau Pēteris Druķis repeated to the media that the circus building is too dangerous.
