On June 15 the Saeima banned the use of wild animals in public performances, reported LSM's Latvian-language service.

The amendments to the Animal Protection Law were adopted by 54 votes 'for', four 'against' and 17 abstaining. A proposal for compiling a list of animals exempt from the law was shut down.

The ban on all public performances involving wild animals is to become effective on July 1 with the proviso that the Riga Circus will be able to use wild animals in performances until January 1, 2018.

In order to become law, the bill has to be promulgated by the president.

Animal rights activists accompanied each reading of the bill with demonstrations outside the Saeima building.
