Women's Day infographic: Gender equality in Latvia

Take note – story published 8 years ago

On March 8 Latvia celebrates the International Women's Day, on which men traditionally give tulips and chocolates to the women dear to them. LSM's Latvian-language service has prepared an infographic that paints the true picture over gender equality in Latvia.

The smarter sex

Only 35% of men have higher education, while 65% of women have been educated beyond high school.

At her majesty's service?

Despite being better-educated on the whole, women are heavily underrepresented in the Latvian parliament.

Good company?

The picture in the leading positions of Latvia's big companies is similar to that in the parliament, with the exception of department managers.

Padomes locekļi - council members, Valdes locekļi - board members, Struktūrvienību vadītāji - department managers, Darbinieki - employees.

At the blackboard

In Latvia, teachers are close to exclusively women.

Still 'breadwinners'

Women earn, on the average, only 83% of what men do.

Who lives longer?

Men may be earning more, but women have far more time to spend that bread, as they live more than ten years longer on the average.
