Heavy rain washes away roads

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Heavy rain in parts of Latvia has caused several roads to become impassable and in some cases, to disappear altogether.

Downpours have caused havoc to travellers and to farmers, with Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis and Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs both announcing talks on providing compensation for farmers affected by the weather.

Kucinskis will make it to the Latgale region on Monday 28 August, his office announced August 25.

The east of the country was particularly inundated, with an emergency situation declared -- though this sounds more dramatic than it really is and is primarily required to unlock the aforementioned compensation payments.

Drivers are advised to check routes before departing on their journeys HERE where an interactive map shows trouble spots.

The video report below shows some of the affected sites. More rain is expected over the weekend.
