33 thousand run in Rīga Marathon

A total of 33,590 runners from 65 countries participated in Lattelecom Rīga Marathon on rainy but otherwise pleasant Sunday, according to info by the organizers. 

Runners from African countries dominated the marathon distance, with Dominic Kangor Kimwetich from Kenya finishing first in men's marathon within 2:11:45.

While Ethiopia's Shitaye Gemechu Debellu took first place in women's marathon with 2:38:40. Latvia's Anita Kažemāka finished 4th (2:44:09), qualifying for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The marathon was held peacefully. Four runners required medical assistance for minor injuries.

The Rīga Marathon has been held annually since 1991. 26,000 took part in the marathon last year, which suggests that participant numbers are growing.
