A giant lantern festival called 'In Wonderland' arrives in Latvia later this week. From February 4 to March 13, the Sigulda Castle Square and the Castle Ruins will be the place to experience what is billed as "one of the most spectacular light festivals in Northern Europe."

The theme of the festival is inspired by Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' and features more than 300 light effects and silk sculptures of different colours and sizes, made from thousands of metres of silk fabric and millions of light bulbs along with music composed specifically for the festival by electronic music composer and performer Leon Somov.

"The festival of lights In Wonderland is a celebration that brightens the dark of winter by bringing light and joy to children and adults. The festival organisers note that this will be the first time that Latvia will have the opportunity to see handmade large-scale silk sculptures that glow in every colour of the rainbow. There will be a chance to meet a rabbit, the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland, giant glowing mushrooms, a magical forest of flowers and many other fairytale creatures and beings," the organizers say.

Visitors can also explore creative workshops of craftsmen in the Sigulda Castle Square, enjoy hot drinks and visit the Sigulda New Castle (for an additional entrance fee).

Tickets will be available to buy online for specific time slots to ensure a controlled flow of visitors. There will be no refunds for tickets not used on a given day and time. Additional charges will be applied if tickets are purchased on site.

If tickets are purchased on site, the entrance fee for adults will be EUR 18, for children of age 6 and above – EUR 13, for family tickets – EUR 45 and EUR 55. Tickets bought in advance are slightly cheaper. Full details are available at www.brinumzemesfestivali.lv. Residents with a Sigulda Municipality ID card will receive a 15% discount.

The festival will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 18:00 to 22:00.
