The eight episodes will fuse horror and thriller genres with comedy elements, and will introduce viewers to long-forgotten and perhaps unheard Latvian myths and ghost stories, the filmmakers say.
The scriptwriters, Canadian Nigel Leadbitter and Latvian Māris Broks, have dedicated each of the episodes to a separate story with its own storyline and characters. Eight different directors have been brought on board to work on the stories of Jumprava, Vadātājs, Lietuvēns, the Queen of Spades and many other characters from Latvian mythology.
"The horror film genre has not been widely represented in the Latvian film industry so far. Myths and ghost stories are rooted in our traditions, so we wanted to revive them in a modern and entertaining way. We wanted to show how diverse Latvian culture is, rich in unique characters and mythical stories that the younger generation might not have even heard of," says Māris Broks, one of the authors of the script.
Each storyline of the series tells a separate tale of Latvian mythological creatures and their encounters with the various characters of the story, as well as revealing unexpected and frightening events that the characters of the story find themselves caught up in.
The series will be filmed in several locations in Latvia. The cast includes a diverse team of actors and public figures.
