Three for the Independence Day weekend in Latvia

On November 18, Latvia celebrates its Independence Day, which means the weekend will be a bit longer.

We have already covered the November 18 events in Rīga, the Staro Rīga light festival over the entire weekend, and the filmas.lv online Latvian film festival. Here are some events taking place in the major cities outside Rīga this weekend.

Liepāja

Liepāja has a host of events during the weekend in the theme of Latvian Independence Day.

On November 15 and 16, at the Rožu Square, there will be a local crafts and production market with different goods – food, jewelry, designer clothing, and other festive items.

On November 16, an Independence Day concert "Latvia 106" takes place at the Great Amber Concert hall with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and video artists.

On November 17, a ball "Happy Birthday, Latvia" will take place at the Liepāja Latvian Society House, with Andris Ērglis & Co providing the musical entertainment.

On November 18, an Independence Day concert will take place at the Jāņa Čakstes Square.

Rēzekne

Rēzekne and its vicinity will also have several events on Monday, November 18.

These include a concert with Rēzekne Bigband, Normunds Rutulis, Rēzekne Joint Choir, and Rēzekne Music school students at the Latgale Embassy GORS, a run "Breathe in Rēzekne", as well as a concert by the "Latgales Māra" monument with opera singers and folk dancers.

In the Rēzekne vicinity, there will also be concerts at the Ozolmuiža Culture House, Vērēmu Folk House, and Griškāni Culture House.

Jūrmala

If you wish to go outside Rīga but not too far, you can go to Jūrmala.

On November 17, the Dzintari Concert Hall will house a concert with actors and musicians playing out the texts of prominent Latvian independence supporters, poets Imants Ziedonis and Ojārs Vācietis.

On November 18, Jūrmala will ignite a "Way of Light" where everyone is welcome to bring a candle and participate. At 15:30 you can light a candle anywhere between the Lielupe Bridge and Ķemeri. At 16:00 the Way of Light will be lit at the Aspazija House (Z. Meierovica Drive 18/20) with the choir "Latvis".

At 18:00 there will be a concert at Jomas Street 47/49 with Latvian bards Anta Eņģele and Melisa Debora Kaškura., whereas at 20:00, a 2-hour concert will begin at the Kauguru Culture House. This will conclude with fireworks.
