14 persons interested in State Language Center's top job

Fourteen applications have been received for the position of director of the State Language Center, a government announcement has confirmed.

An open competition was launched on July 17 and all the applicants' documents will now be evaluated by the tender commission responsible for the contest, before a decision is made on how many of the applicants make it to the next round of the competition.

In the second round of the competition, each applicant will have to explain to the competition commission their motivation, answer the commission's questions and present their vision for improving the monitoring of the use of the national language, promoting and popularizing its use, and taking digitization.

Then in the third round of selection, applicants' management competencies such as strategic vision, ability to make decisions and take responsibility, motivating and developing employees, managing change and orientation towards achieving results will be tested.

At the end of the competition, one or more applicants with the highest evaluation will be recommended to the Minister of Justice for appointment – though the Minister also has the option of not choosing anyone and starting the whole competition process all over again.

When an appointment is made, the person filling it can expect a monthly salary of 4,200 euros before taxes, plus bonuses.

The State Language Center (VVC), should not be confused with the Latvian Language Agency (LVA), though it sometimes is.

The VVC says it "implements the national policy in regard to supervision and control of the conformity with laws and regulations in the field of the official language use," and "supervises the implementation of the Official Language Law."

On the other hand, the LVA says its aim is "to enhance the status and promote sustainable development of the Latvian language" and that it is "implementing the state language policy".
