Latvian 'Flow' named as eligible for Oscar nomination

The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the lists of films eligible for Oscar nominations in the International, Animated Feature, and Documentary Feature categories, among which are Latvian "Flow" by Gints Zilbalodis.

Latvia nominated the internationally successful "Flow" by Gints Zilbalodis as its entry in the competition this year, but now the Academy has also confirmed that the film meets the criteria to be nominated in the animation category.

The lists released on November 21 are not yet the shortlists. Those will be announced on December 17. These lists include all international, feature-length animated, and feature-length documentary films that have been submitted for an Oscar by their creators and that meet all the criteria for the award.

Out of the 31 animated films in the running, five will be nominated.

Films submitted in the animated category are also eligible for Oscar nominations in other categories, including Best Picture.

In addition to 'Flow', the Animated Feature category includes 'The Garfield Movie', 'Ghost Cat Anzu', 'Inside Out 2', 'Kung Fu Panda 4', 'The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim', 'Moana 2' and others.

This year, the International Film category received entries from 85 countries or regions. This year, the Latvian National Film Centre's panel of industry experts nominated Flow.

Latvian films have been listed in the past, but have not yet received an Oscar nomination.
