Three for the Weekend: Mushrooms, Art, Liepāja

We may have seen the last of summer sunshine, but there's no need to spend the weekend huddled miserably around a fire trying to keep warm – at least not for a few more weeks. So go and have some fun while you can! Here are our weekend suggestions.

Mushroom mania

It was postponed due to lack of mushrooms, but now they are available in abundance, so delve into the mycological world at the annual fungus exhibition at the Latvian Natural History Museum in central Rīga.

Survival Kit art events

The annual 'Survival Kit' art festival is taking place or the 15th time and breathes life into empty buildings. This year's exhibition takes place at one building in Rīga's old town - Amatu Street 4, and two buidings on the other side of the River Daugava in Pārdaugava - E. Smilģa Street 34a and Strazdu Street 4.

The name of the festival theme this year is "Measures" and this weekend's activities include intriguing-sounding "chirping sessions led by the Flemish artist Myriam van Imschoot".

Liepāja Art Forum

Over the last few years, the Liepāja Art Forum has become increasingly popular – and not only because the city's stint as a European Capital of Culture is looming in 2027. This year, the  festival turns ten years old, and the question involuntarily comes to mind – what next?

"This year, we have chosen 'Succession' as the general theme of the festival, and not only to reflect on the coming years of the festival's life, but also to consciously think about the future of our society and each individual," say the organizers.
