Three for the Weekend: Baltic bonfires, Last days of vacation, Documentaries in Rīga

Here are three ideas for things to do this weekend.

Bonfires on the Baltic coast

On Saturday, August 31, the Night of the Ancient Fire will be celebrated on Liepāja beach and other locations along the coast, which symbolizes the unity and connection between the peoples of the Baltic Sea.

The event in Liepāja will be the biggest and will take place at the Roņu Street exit to the sea and will start at 8:00 p.m., when along with the sunset and the lighting of bonfires, the people of Liepāja and the guests of the city can enjoy a concert by the musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist 'Shipsea' (Jānis Šipkēvics), together with the talented singer Una Daniela.

The ancient tradition of Bonfire Night, lighting bonfires on the seashore, symbolically shows the unity of the peoples of the sea and reminds of the shared history and cultural heritage. The Night of the Ancient Fire events take place in many places on the Baltic Sea coast, and every year more and more residents from Estonia, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Finland, Norway and other countries join the action. In Latvia, this tradition has been celebrated since 2010.

Last days of vacation in Daugavpils

With the academic year starting on Monday, this weekend sees special events for school-age kids in many places as they bid farewell to the summer vacation, with Daugavpils providing a typical example.

On September 1 from 10:00 to 12:00, visitors will be able to test their dexterity and skills in various sports and relays in the central park of Daugavpils. The first 300 participants will receive prizes from the organizers and supporters of the event. Festival visitors will be entertained by animators, while a DJ will pump out the beats.

From At 18.00 at the "Navigators" youth center, the last afternoon of summer vacation will be marked by a concert of young dancers and musicians, with novus and disc golf also on offer. The event is intended for young people from the age of 13.

New documentaries in Rīga

The K. Suns cinema in central Rīga is the venue for the annual Baltic Sea Forum for Documentaries running September 1-6.

The films will be shown in their original language with subtitles in English, and translation into Latvian will be provided as well.

The main event of the Forum is the marketplace for documentaries projects, where creators of the documentary genre from the Baltic States, Poland, the Ukraine, Belorussia, Russia, Georgia, France, Germany, and other European countries can find a helping hand in their quest for co-financing of their projects.
