Bauska municipality named Youth Capital of Latvia

The title “Youth Capital of Latvia 2023” has been awarded to the municipality of Bauska, the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) said on August 12.

The winner of the competition was determined by a panel, also taking into account the results of the public vote.

In its application, the municipality of Bauska stated: “We do not want standstill spaces to wait for young people, we want to act proactively and reach young people on our own, and we are trying to organize events as close as possible to young people.”

Three municipalities – Bauska municipality, Cēsis municipality and the first winner of the title of Latvian Youth Capital – Jelgava city municipality – fought for the title this year.

The competition was organized for the sixth time and aims to promote youth cooperation between municipalities, promote local government cooperation and exchanges of experience in the youth field, and increase the prestige of those involved in youth organizations, said the IZM.

The first youth capital in 2016 was Jelgava. In 2017 it was Liepaja, while Madona municipality won the competition in 2018. In 2019, the title was won by the association of two municipalities - the municipalities of Ikšķile and Olaine, while Ventspils won the title of the youth capital in 2020.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2021 and 2022, the Youth Capital was not selected, but there was an internet vote organised under the “Best at Work with Youth” contest, in which Rēzekne and Jūrmala won.

The competition is organized by IZM in cooperation with the National Youth Council of Latvia and the representation of the European Commission in Latvia.
