Beloved granite pig starts return of art to national gallery

Tuesday the first artwork - the Teodors Zaļkalns' porcine sculpture titled 'Pig' - was returned to the freshly-renovated Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMM), reported Latvian Radio.

About 40,000 works of art are to be transported back to the museum.

"What was the most popular artwork for visitors of many generations in the art museum? In informal surveys it was named to be 'Pig', a 1937 sculpture by Teodors Zaļkalns," LNMM director Māra Lāce told Latvian Radio.

Zaļkalns (1876-1972) made one of the most recognizable sculptural works in Latvian art by breaking a stereotype about which animals are and which are not allowed to become symbolic works of art.

Late last year the renovated but at that time empty museum was opened for the general public for five days, during which it was reportedly visited by 125,000 people.

The Grand Opening of LNMA is scheduled for May 4.
