Brits claim November in Latvia

Take note – story published 8 years ago

November in Latvia will be "British Month", the United Kingdom's ambassador to the country, Sarah Cowley said Wednesday, introducing four weeks of cultural and culinary Union Jackery.

Having grabbed a mere week last year, the British are coming with a full month in 2015.

The celebration will be organized in four thematic weeks - the opening week will be dedicated to culture and education, the second week will be dedicated to fashion and commerce, the third dedicated to cuisine, exclusive products and tourism, and the month will close with a week focusing on business ventures.

Communications specialist at the British Embassy Andra Jakovica, noted that during the culture and education week, events such as "Education is Great" on November 5 will take place. People will be introduced to the opportunities of studying in the Great Britain, as well as meet with alumni.

"A lot of young people chose to study in the UK and this is why we want to emphasize education this week," added Cowley.

On November 7, a Guy Fawkes Night will be held at RISEBA Architecture and Media Center. As Jakovica explained, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London in 1605 and ever since the event has been commemorated with firework displays and burning "The Guy" in effigy.

In theory at least, it is the foiling of the plot that is celebrated, not the attempt to blow up parliament.

During the first week, in a variety of schools and higher education institutions, British Film week will be held where several British movies will be shown.

On November 5 the latest James Bond movie - "Spectre", will be shown at several theaters, and on November 6 the Irish comedian Dylan Moran will do stand-up at Riga Congress Center.

November 9-15, a fashion and commerce week will be held with various British brand fashion shows at the "Pop-Up" Gallery and at "Accessorize", "Debenhams", "Mothercare", and "Oasis" outlets in Riga.

During the third week - dedicated to cuisine, exclusive products and tourism, some restaurants and the shopping mall "Stockmann" will offer special deals on British food.

And the month's grand finale will be an entrepreneurship week November 23-29 where a delegation from West Midlands will be introduced to the local market here in Riga.
