Director Edmunds Jansons received the Renzo Kinoshita memorial award for his animated film ‘Choir Tour’ at the 15th International Animation Festival in Hiroshima, Japan, reported LSM’s culture desk Wednesday.

The festival jury cited Jansons’ work for its finely innovative graphic design, fresh approach to soundtracking, colorful characters, humor and entertaining plot.

The film’s music was composed by Ģirts Bišs and recorded by the Riga Dom Boys’ Choir. Film studio Atom Art produced the work.

‘Choir Tour’ tells the story of a world-famous boys’ choir from Latvia heading off on a distant concert tour. The conductor manages to herd the boys together and tune them together like a fine instrument, yet upon getting stuck in an elevator she cannot keep them from reverting into mischievous kids.

‘Choir Tour’ has already been screened at more than 50 festivals around the world, garnering praise from juries and audiences alike. Jansons also previously received awards for the film at the London International Animated Film festival last November, and the Zagreb Festival in June of this year.

The Hiroshima Animation Festival was launched in 1985 and is considered to be one of the foremost prestigious animated film festivals along with Ottawa, Zagreb and Annecy, France. Under the theme of love and peace, the biennial event gives filmmakers the opportunity to screen their works and interact with other animation artists. This year’s competition included 2217 films from all over the world, of which 59 were selected for the contest’s final cut. Two of the entries came from Latvia – Jansons’ ‘Choir Tour’ and Vladimirs Ļeščovs’ ‘Rain Days’.
