Exhibition dedicated to poet Čaks opens in Rīga

This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of Latvian Riflemen, and 75 years have passed since urban poet Aleksandrs Čaks' collection of epic poems Mūžības skartie (Those touched by eternity) was released in a single volume. The book describes the fights of the Latvian Riflemen, and a commemorative exhibition Čaka skartie (Those touched by Čaks) was opened Tuesday at Rīgas Mākslas telpa, reported Latvian Radio's Māra Rozenberga on Wednesday.

The exhibition gives the chance to look into the poet's imagination when he worked at the poems.

The people behind the exhibition have created an atmosphere of entrenchments, where the Latvian Riflemen meet the person who described them, Aleksandrs Čaks.

"We brought 20th century trenches to the 21st century. We traveled through time, played with light, darkness, feelings, odors. As you can see, 3-meter birches can grow underground too," said the curator of the exhibition Gundega Zende.

She showed a table with Čaks' notes, manuscripts and materials from the time when he had dedicated himself to the topic of riflemen.

"Here anyone can come, sit, perhaps take their own copy of Mūžības skartie, to read and to enjoy. To give Čaks on his birthday 15 minutes that they can spend together with Those touched by Čaks, the riflemen who were sung about by Čaks, as well as with Čaks himself," said Zende.

You can sit on straw bags at the Rīgas mākslas telpa, perhaps with a book of Čaks' poems or by looking at the video projections on the wall of the hall.

A number of other Čaks' books have been re-released in all new color as part of the anniversary.
